Kate Reid's vocals recalls of classic torch singers like Anita O'Day and Carmen McRae. Reid's timbres have a bourbon tint, and the fluidity and elasticity of her vocal chords are tempered beautifully with her repertoire, which consists of tunes from the American songbook. Her self-released CD The Love I'm In is a collection of candlelit melodies all about love and heartache, and she makes these aged tunes seem like they were made for contemporary audiences.

The Love I’m In is an excellent follow up to Sentimental Mood, furthering the artistry and exploration of discography, Kate Reid delivers a stunning result and a disc certainly worth adding to your vocal jazz collection, most likely at the top of the stack.

Velvety, smoldering voice with the phrasing that takes all these ultra-familiar tunes down unfamiliar streets that would upset mama, if she knew.  In other words, this isn’t Frank’s “Nice And Easy.”  Stellar backing by a quintet that includes hubby Steve Reid on trumpet (nice…on “Just Squeeze Me”), Chris Conner on bass, Steve Barnes on drums, Ernie Watts on tenor sax, and pianist Otmaro Ruiz on three tracks – this disc is a great addition to anyone’s collection of yummy vocal artistry.  That it took this release to remind me of the other one, was sort of like that twenty dollar bill you find in the suit you haven’t worn in a while. It’s the lagniappe. This disc is very highly recommended.

When a singer’s able to play, it’s usually a sign that your ears are in for a treat… in Kate’s case, the talent is totally evident from the opening bar of the opener, “Just Squeeze Me“… her vocal intro, with Steve Reid’s muted trumpet accompanying her, is smooth & zesty!  The 6:04 “Where Do You Start” runs your ears through the whole range of emotions you might expect with a title like that… very, very pretty.  An even dozen tunes that will rotate through your playlists often.  Kate’s piano work on the laid-back “I’m Through With Love” is totally engaging and will enchant jazz lovers of all stripes.  If you love well-executed jazz vocals, you’ll agree with me that this is MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED… “EQ” (energy quotient) rating is 4.97.

Ms Reid is a direct link back to the grand dames of jazz: Ella, Sarah and Peggy, while adding a little instrumental pizzazz. I think if you like Diana Krall then you will really enjoy Kate Reid - for me, I find Ms Reid far more enjoyable as a performer, her approach to the songs is more direct and yes, affectionate. It is quite an interesting dip into the songbook, a mixture of golden oldies along with some rarities not so well known.

"Kate Reid plays a fine, swinging piano, and sings like, well, a jazz singer should sing! This is her second CD, and it's every bit as good as her first, "Sentimental Mood." If you lean in the direction of a sultry low voice along the lines of Julie London or Shirley Horn, you're going to love Reid — although she sounds only like Kate Reid. And wow, does she choose great standard tunes! Reid's the real deal: a thoroughly gifted jazz singer who respects lyrics."

The Love I’m In is music of someone whose voice is warm and comforting, and as I said before, there is a slight Diana Krall feel to what she does but the more I listen, the more I hear more of her own qualities. Her approach to each of these jazz standards is quite good, very respectable not only to the songwriters and artists who have made it their own, but to the sentiment of each of these songs. As for her piano work, it’s great when she gets locked in a moment after a chorus and I would not mind hearing a full instrumental project from her.  The Love I’m In may be emotional, but it’s very much musical, for the title kind of suggests that she is within what she loves the most, and that’s the songs that have moved people throughout the generations. Now it’s time for this generation to understand these songs, and to discover the talents of Reid.

The very definition of a working musician, Reid doesn’t miss an opportunity to hone her chops whether it has her backing up Josh Groban or singing on cruise ships when taking time off from her duties as an educator.  A solid swinging, jazz vocalist that has the classic vibe down so well you’d follow her act to any clip joint where the two drink minimum runs over $50 just to hear what’s up her sleeve next.  A real treat for classic jazz vocal fans that want something new with a big red ribbon wrapped around it.  Killer stuff.
